Wandering Fields

Wandering Fields is a homage to places that, to us, are “home”, a carpet of soil made up of the anthropic layers form the valleys of the Po’ and Rhine rivers, the coccio pesto obtained from abandoned farmsteads, the shells from the Wadden Sea, a waste material form the sand extraction process. It is a project of literal geography: a land-structure on which you can draw, and simultaneously be cartographers, designers and authors of this depicted land. Following the footsteps of Borges and the paradox of the Map of the Empire -a map as big as the land it represents- we brought together some scraps of this land of soil, some of the tools it has been drawn with, and a new image, imagined and brought to life by Giovanni Hänninen. The image takes into consideration the transformation of this landscape in a time interval of two months, conveying the shapes of the shells from the Wadden Sea and the traces left by the visitors-geographers, the human footprints of shoes and feet and the traces of a greyhound -aptly named “Terra”- that played on the map just a few minutes before a photograph was taken.

The Wandering Fields installation was built at Assab One, upon invitation by Elena Quarestani and Federica Sala. Thanks to Assab One, Municipio 2, and casa del Sole, all the materials of Wandering Fields are now at Parco Trotter in Milan, waiting to be cultivated in the spring by students and their parents.

Wandering Fields è un omaggio a luoghi che sono, per noi, “casa”, un tappeto di terra composto dai suoli antropici delle valli del Po’ e del Reno, dal coccio pesto ricavato dai mattoni delle cascine dismesse, alle conchiglie del mare dei Wadden, materia “di scarto” dell’estrazione della sabbia. È un progetto di geografia letterale: una terra-infrastruttura su cui disegnare, ed essere al contempo cartografi, progettisti, e autori del territorio rappresentato. Inseguendo Borges e il paradosso della mappa dell’Impero -una mappa grande quanto il territorio che rappresenta- portiamo dei frammenti della mappa di terra, alcuni degli strumenti con cui è stata disegnata, insieme ad una nuova immagine, pensata e realizzata da Giovanni Hänninen. L’immagine rende conto della trasformazione di questo paesaggio in un intervallo temporale di due mesi, restituendo i contorni delle conchiglie del Mare di Wadden e le tracce lasciate dai visitatori-geografi, le impronte di piedi e scarpe e le orme di un levriero -chiamato, appropriatamente, “Terra”- che sulla mappa ha giocato pochi minuti prima di uno scatto.

L’installazione Wandering Fields è stata realizzata ad Assab One, su invito di Elena Quarestani e Federica Sala. Grazie al lavoro di Assab One, del Municipio 2, e della casa del Sole, i materiali di Wandering fields sono ora al Parco Trotter a Milano, in attesa di essere coltivati in primavera dai genitori e gli alunni della scuola.
