In wolof ‘Goor-jigeen’ means literally ‘Man-woman’, by generalisation gay and akin to an insult.
In Senegal, being homosexual is punishable by law up to to five years of imprisonment. In the last years a homophobic wave hit the country, with public rallies asking to heighten the punishment.
In this tough environment, some associations fight for the recognition of the human rights of the LGBT community. Activists based in Dakar risk their lives to help young men to survive the stigma of being homosexual.
Some of these young men spent time in prison because of their sexual orientation. Others had no other choice than flee the country, hoping for a better future in Europe.

In Senegal, essere omosessuali è punibile dalla legge fino a cinque anni di reclusione. Negli ultimi anni un’ondata omofoba ha colpito il Paese, con manifestazioni pubbliche per richiedere un inasprimento delle pene.
In questa difficile situazione, alcune associazioni lottano per il riconoscimento dei diritti umani della comunità LGBT. Gli attivisti di Dakar rischiano la vita per aiutare i giovani uomini a sopravvivere allo stigma dell’essere omosessuali.
Alcuni di questi giovani hanno trascorso del tempo in prigione a causa del loro orientamento sessuale. Altri non avevano altra scelta che fuggire dal Paese, con la speranza di trovare un futuro migliore in Europa.
